Utingu, the place of tall trees

First settled as a coconut plantation in 1911 on the western shore of the Cape York Peninsular, Australia.

Officially surveyed in 1913 and purchased as freehold land, size 220 acres, or 88.77 hectares. This beachside property is located above the eleventh parallel, in line with Thursday Island and in the Torres Shire Council area. It is believed to be the only freehold land on the mainland peninsular region above the fifteenth parallel.

The property is featured in a book named “My Crowded Solitude” written by Jack McLaren, which achieved worldwide distribution.  The Torres Strait and Endeavour Straits regions were the centre of the south seas pearling industry that commenced about the mid-1880’s, and UTINGU became well known and a tourist destination.  Famous for its unique location and pleasant tropical climate, the property has very high quality natural spring water and clean air without pollution.  Currently zoned for development as a high class resort site and other use potential.

Being freehold land, it is not restricted by issues found in most Cape York locations.  The location on the western shore provides dramatic sunsets and pleasant weather patterns.

The property has unsealed road access to the main road system.  There are two airports servicing the region, one being at the nearby town of BAMAGA, about a forty minute drive from the site, and the most popular one on HORN ISLAND, (Beside Thursday Island) where QANTAS have a morning and an afternoon flight to and from Cairns.  Preferred transfer from Qantas to the site is by helicopter taking about fifteen minutes, or by ferry to the nearby mainland town of SEISIA.

This highly prized location was lost in time from the early 1930’s until about 2005 when it was acquired by the current owner.
